Danish mission Hospital (DMH) at Virudachalam was started in the year 1925 by Dr. Amos Lucas of the Danish Mission Society. He bought a land north of the town near the railway station, so that there would be space for future expansion. Also the site was chosen since it is adjacent to the railway station so that people from adjacent places would have easy access to the hospital. He and his wife started a polyclinic in the Doctor's quarters and served the population of Virudachalam and surrounding areas. The hospital had general medicine & surgery, a labor unit, government supported nutrition program and later an Eye department was started with the support of Christoffel-Blindenmission (CBM). After 1990s, the hospital faced several problems including shortage of doctors and eventually closed down. Through a joint venture between the Arcot Lutheran Church, Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church and United Evangelical Lutheran Churches in India, the hospital was renovated, revived and rededicated to the community on 14th January 2021.
